La correspondencia entre letras y fonemas era imperfecta incluso entonces. En algunas palabras que pueden funcionar como contables o incontables se dan dos formas en asturiano central: una contable en -u y otra incontable en -o, p.

Se opone a resonante. Fricativa producida con mucho ruido. Se opone a obstruyente. Toma este nombre del de la letra griega ro o rho. Los sonidos fricativos y africados contienen ruido. Dialecto social. Los segmentos se pueden ordenar a lo largo de una escala de sonoridad en que las vocales bajas tienen el mayor grado de sonoridad y las oclusivas sordas el menor. Se opone a sordo.
